King: Owned all land, one quarter was kept by the King as his personal property. Some was given to the church and the rest was leased out under strict controls (Study scaffold). Barron:Had to swear elegance to the King, pay rent and provide the King with Knights for military service. The Barons established their own system of justice, minted their own money, and set their own taxes. They kept as much of their land as they wished for their own use, then divided the rest among their Knights. Knights:In return for the land they were given the Knights had to give military services as demanded by the King and to protect the Baron and his property. The Knights kept as much of their land as they wished and distributed the rest to the serfs(middleages.net). Nobelmen:Kings, local lords, and knights were all part-of a ruling class that called itself noblemen. Nobelwoman:Were the wives and daughters of noblemen. They were in charge of the household servants and supervised the upbringing of children. They also helped take care of the sick and the poor. In certain cases, noblewomen themselves could own land. They could inherit it from their parents or from their husbands. When a nobleman was away, his wife ruled the manor. This meant that the noblewoman, if called upon by her lord, could send knights into battle, just as a man would. Serf's:Had to provide the knights with free labour, food and service whenever it was demanded. They were not allowed to leave the Baron’s property and had to even ask the Baron’s permission before they could marry(medievalcastle.org). Church:Everyone in Europe was a Christian during the Middle Ages from the richest king down to the lowest serf.In addition to collecting taxes, the Church also accepted gifts of all kinds these gifts included land, flocks, crops, and even serfs. This allowed the Church to become very powerful, and it often used this power to influence kings to do as it wanted. Priests:Worked for the church and also blessed the knights.Priests also did baptisms and weddings and were an important part of the church. Bishops: Were the leaders of the church, serving under the pope, the bishop of Rome. Most bishops were noblemen. Monks and nuns: Were men and women who gave up their possessions and left ordinary life to live in monasteries and convents. They lived very simply, could not marry and devoted themselves to prayer, study, and helping the poor. They also served as doctors. Servants: Were peasants who worked in the lord's manor house, doing the cooking, cleaning, laundering, and other household chores. (Themiddleages.net) (Study scaffold)
